Designing the BBC children’s app platform

Cbeebies is the BBC’s brand for children aged 0-6. It reaches around 70% of children in the UK through its TV and digital platforms.

The BBC has four children’s apps focused on gaming, creativity, reading and learning.

The challenge

The 4 Cbeebies apps were all similar… but different.
Each app was built using different technology and designed in isolation. We were duplicating work, instead of concentrating on providing the best possible experience for our users.

I designed a new unified app platform for the 4 Cbeebies apps.
Creating a design system for the app platform that is consistent, but also delightful and flexible enough to give the four apps their own identity.

Before

Impact

  • Production and maintenance cost saving for the business.

  • Quicker to ‘theme’ for events or holidays, meaning able to build app store promotions which increase usage and downloads.

  • Consistent experience that had been thoroughly usability and accessibility tested with our child audience.

My role

User Experience Designer
Working within a multi-disciplinary product team, collaborating closely with two designers who specialised in illustration and motion design.
I also worked with Content Producers and TV brand owners to ensure the product aligned with our brand objectives.

A new flexible design system

Layering unique illustration and animation assets to create a ‘world’ for each app.

Accessible experience

Keeping navigation and key UI elements consistent after completing thorough accessibility testing.

Adaptable to different content types

Secondary menu designed to allow for video, gaming and storytelling content.

Delightful result

Using performant animations to introduce the apps and delight users.
